Gifts from a Harnessed Tiger Moth

From Homebase in Oak Harbor, Kimberly Writes: On August 1, 2014, I removed what I thought was a dead Harnessed Tiger Moth from a spider web outside our house. I don't make a habitat of denying spiders a meal, but the moth was freshly "dead" and still looked beautiful, so I wanted to photograph it. When I did, I was stunned to see that in the final moments of her life, she had laid several eggs! 

I somehow felt personally responsible for these tiny pearls she bestowed upon me, and I set about to raise them as best I could.

Here's a photographic journey though that amazing experience.

I actually watched the caterpillars hatching under a microscope.

Unlike other lepodoptera that wriggle until their final skin drops off after they pupate, 
Harnessed Tiger Moths wear theirs like an odd toupee!

What an amazing experience it was to be a foster mama to these tiny drops of life, to watch them grow, to see them fly away, free to carry one this beautiful circle of life.

    I just read your article in my July 2021 Country Sampler and found your blog. This is amazing! I didn't know anyone could do this. Congratulations 'Mama'. If only the mama moth knew her babies had lived on.

Kenn Writes: Some bird painters can put down just a few lines on canvas or paper and then start painting. I respect that, but it doesn't work for me; I have to have a detailed idea of where things are going before I start to lay in any color. I recently started a portrait of an immature Great Black Hawk, and the basic drawing evolved over a couple of days. On the left here is the subfinal drawing. After putting it aside for a while, I decided to change the position of the head, make the bill a little thicker, and make a few other adjustments. I'll probably make more changes in the process of painting, but at least the foundation is set in advance.

Which Way for ABA?

From a state of contemplation, Kenn writes: The American Birding Association (ABA) has been an important part of my life ever since I joined, at the age of 16, back in the 1970s. The ABA was a brand-new organization then, and it served a unique role in connecting the active birders of the U.S. and Canada. Its little bimonthly magazine, Birding, was a treasure trove for me as a teenager, giving me tips on bird-finding and bird identification that I wouldn’t have known about in any other way.
